Lusa - Business News - Portugal: A beacon of stability in uncertain times – prime minister

Braga, Portugal, May 26, 2026 (Lusa) - Portugal's prime minister, Luís Montenegro, said on Tuesday that the current climate of global uncertainty could present an opportunity for Portugal, underlining that the Portuguese economy has everything to become a beacon of stability.

“In these times of instability, Portugal has everything it needs to be a beacon of stability, knowledge, performance, and a beacon for attracting and securing investment,” he said at the opening of the Industry Summit, which the University of Minho and the newspaper Observador in Braga organised.

The government is working towards this goal, notably through its labour taxation policies, which have cut personal income tax four times to demonstrate that hard work is rewarded.

Similarly, he highlighted reductions in corporate income tax aimed at boosting business profitability, which in turn would enable companies to pay higher wages.

He pointed out that Portugal is currently growing faster than the European Union average, maintains balanced public finances, benefits from an excellent geographical location, possesses a strong technological focus, and has built bridges globally.

“We have the capacity to grow consistently by 3.5 or 4% annually,” he said.
