Lusa - Business News - Angola: President approves €132.8M to buy 14 helicopters for defence ministry

Luanda, April 23, 2026 (Lusa) – The Angolan president has authorised a financing agreement between Angola and the Italian financial institution Intesa SanPaolo S.P.A. worth €132.8 million for the purchase of 14 helicopters.

João Lourenço, in a presidential decree seen on Wednesday by Lusa, authorises the conclusion of the financing agreement between Angola and the Italian institution, with cover from the Italian Export Credit Agency SACE for the total amount, including insurance premium, of €132.8 million.

The funds will support the acquisition of 12 AW 119M and two AW119KX helicopters for the Ministry of Defence. The agreement ensures training services, technical publications, spare parts supply, and technical assistance. The minister of Finance now holds the authority to sign the financing agreement and all related documentation.

In a separate decree, Lourenço authorised a financing agreement with the Bank of China for up to €54.6 million. Covered by the China Export & Credit Insurance Corporation (Sinosure), this deal will fund a digital education project.

The initiative aims to modernise information technologies and promote digital literacy among pupils, reinforcing the executive's commitment to human development and the improvement of the Angolan education system. The total financing covers 85% of the commercial contract value and 85% of the Sinosure insurance premium, thereby ensuring the successful implementation of the digital education project.
