Lisbon, April 16, 2026 (Lusa) – The Lisbon stock market is trading lower on Thursday morning, with EDP and EDP Renováveis falling 1.95% to €4.58 and 0.99% to €13.96, respectively. Around 9.30 a.m in Lisbon, the PSI (Portuguese Stock Index) was holding its opening trend, retreating 1.26% to 9,331.38 points. Nine companies were up, five down, and two were unchanged (Ibersol at €11.70 and Corticeira Amorim at €6.61). Shares in REN, NOS, and Sonae followed the decline of the two EDP companies, dropping 0.79% to €3.71, 0.27% to €5.48, and 0.20% to €1.98, respectively.
In contrast, Mota-Engil, Teixeira Duarte, and Jerónimo Martins were climbing 2.25% to €4.92, 1.40% to €0.44, and 1.33% to €21.34. CTT, Semapa, and Altri were also rising, by 0.53% to €6.68, 0.45% to €22.40, and 0.41% to €4.88. The other three companies trending upwards were BCP (0.27% to €0.91), Navigator (0.24% to €3.37), and Galp (0.08% to €19.33).
Major European markets opened higher on Thursday. Optimism over resumed peace talks between the US and Iran, alongside Wednesday's record high for the Nasdaq, boosted sentiment.
The euro is weaker, falling 0.01% to US$1.1798 in the Frankfurt currency market, compared to US$1.1799 on Wednesday. Brent crude, the European benchmark for June delivery, is up 0.60% to US$95.50. Natural gas for May delivery on the Dutch TTF market, the European standard, is up 1.24% to €42.050 per megawatt-hour (MWh).
US President Donald Trump said in the last few hours that Israeli and Lebanese leaders will hold talks on Thursday to reach a ceasefire. However, the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) and the Lebanese Shia movement Hezbollah resumed "violent clashes" on the southern Lebanese border early Thursday morning.
Wall Street futures currently point to gains, with the Dow Jones up 0.10% and the Nasdaq rising 0.38%. Regarding precious metals, gold is up 1.24% to US$4,827.81 an ounce, while silver is up 1.58% to US$80.2110.
