Maputo, April 2, 2026 (Lusa) - Reports from Maputo indicate that Mozambique is set to invest $12 million (€10.3 million) in partnership with the South Korean government to construct a photovoltaic power plant in Tete province.
According to a statement from the Energy Fund (Funae), the project for the construction of the photovoltaic power plant in the village of Nkantha, Chifunde district, was launched on Wednesday, and is expected to be completed within eight months.
The project, budgeted at around $12 million, is designed to produce up to 750 kilowatts of energy. The initiative stems from an agreement between the Mozambican government and the Korea Institute for the Advancement of Technology, and should benefit more than 1,200 families.
The initiative would improve access to energy in rural areas, driving sustainable socio-economic development, the statement said.
According to Funae, the project strengthens bilateral relations between the two nations, reaffirming Mozambique’s commitment to clean and sustainable energy, expanding energy access and community development.
Lusa previously reported that electricity generation from solar farms in Mozambique grew by 18.6% in 2024, but still accounts for less than 1% of the total.
The budget execution reports for 2024 revealed that solar production reached 101,247 megawatt-hours (MWh), compared to 85,343 MWh for 2023, falling short of the government's target of 138,808 MWh.
Solar power represented just 0.5% of total national production over a 12-month period, with hydroelectric power stations leading the way in 2024 at 83.8%, driven primarily by the Cahora-Bassa hydroelectric plant (81.7% of total electricity generation up to December of that year).
The government aims to deploy solar plants in at least five locations by 2030, with the goal of adding 1,000 MWh of capacity to the national grid.
By 2022 Funae installed approximately 76 photovoltaic systems nationwide, providing power to 580 schools, 560 health centres, and various administrative and economic hubs.
