Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Five dead in 2,777 road accidents over the last seven days

Lisbon, March 24, 2026 (Lusa) - The National Road Safety Authority (ANSR) reported on Tuesday that five people have died in 2,777 road traffic accidents over the last seven days, two more victims and an increase of 122 accidents compared to the same week in 2025.

The ANSR said, in a statement, that road accidents recorded in Portugal between 17 and 23 March also resulted in 39 serious injuries and 808 minor injuries, one more serious injury and 160 more minor injuries than in the same period last year.

During the same week, almost 5 million vehicles were automatically monitored by radar.  The National Speed Control System was responsible for monitoring 4.3 million of these, recording 8,700 speeding vehicles.

According to the statement, radars operated by the National Republican Guard (GNR) and the Public Security Police (PSP) detected 483,500 vehicles and recorded 1,900 breaking the speed limit.

"Road accidents are not inevitable, (…) their serious consequences can be avoided through the adoption of responsible and safe behaviour by all road users”, the ANSR said.
