Lusa - Business News - Mozambique: Netherlands, Germany support Quelimane climate resilience with €20M

Quelimane, Mozambique, March 23, 2026 (Lusa) - The Netherlands and Germany have announced that they will provide €20 million to finance a climate-resilient urban development project in the Mozambican city of Quelimane, Zambezia province.

"The project aims to strengthen the city of Quelimane's resilience to future climate crises, combining engineering work with ecological and nature-based solutions to address flooding, drainage, and urban resilience," reads a joint statement from the embassies of Germany and the Netherlands, released on Monday.

The diplomatic missions explain that the project, named "ZamVisão," is part of a shared vision for flood resilience in that central Mozambican province. They expressed "great pride" in announcing the new support, promising to continue working together with the city of Quelimane to support climate resilience.

"We contribute to ensuring that Quelimane remains a welcoming and safe city for its residents and for a thriving private sector," said the ambassadors of Germany and the Netherlands, as quoted in the document.

The note also mentions that the two diplomats will visit Zambézia province between Tuesday and Thursday, with scheduled meetings with the Secretary of State for Zambézia, Avelino Muchine, the provincial governor, Pio Matos, and the mayor of Quelimane, Manuel de Araújo.

The launch of the "ZamVisão" project is expected during the visit, along with a meeting with Mozambique's minister of Public Works, Housing, and Water Resources, Fernando Rafael.

Mozambique is considered one of the countries most severely affected by global climate change, cyclically facing floods and tropical cyclones during the rainy season, which occurs annually between October and April.
