Lusa - Business News - Angola: State donates 75 t. aid for Mozambique flood victims

Maputo, Jan. 27, 2026 (Lusa) - The Angolan government on Tuesday delivered 20 tonnes of various products to Mozambique, out of a total planned aid package of 75 tonnes for flood victims in the country who "need everything".

"We are bringing around 75 tonnes of various goods, medicines and consumables, clothing, and we have also brought tents and food," said Pinto de Souza, Angola's secretary of state for health, after the arrival of the donations in Maputo.

The 20 tonnes arrived on an Angolan Air Force plane, and the remaining aid will arrive in Mozambique from Wednesday, he said.

"This is a show of solidarity and support that will certainly reduce the effects of the rains (...). Angola stands hand in hand with Mozambique and, naturally, all support will come from the Angolan Government," said Pinto de Sousa.

Mozambique's secretary of state for the Economy, António Grispos, thanked Angola for its support, noting that, at this moment, the victims need “everything” to "alleviate the suffering" caused by the bad weather.

"We are very touched by this gesture. We are extremely grateful for this offer, which will alleviate the suffering of many Mozambicans in what may be the worst floods since independence, with devastating and destabilising consequences," said Grispos.

The secretary of state highlighted the fact that Angola has once again extended a helping hand to Mozambique in difficult times, noting that this action "shows the great affection" it has for Mozambique.

"This shows the great feeling towards Mozambique, which is reciprocal. This reciprocity between brothers that we have between the peoples of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans [is] represented in these 75 tonnes, part of which we received today," he stressed.

António Grispos highlighted the efforts of the Mozambican government in supporting those affected by the floods, noting, however, that "it is never enough for such a great misfortune" that has befallen the population.

In addition to Angola, the European Union, the United States, Portugal, Norway and Japan, as well as neighbouring countries in Southern Africa, have already announced and sent emergency humanitarian aid to Mozambique.

At least 14 people have died in the floods in Mozambique in recent weeks, with almost 155,000 homes flooded, according to provisional data from the National Institute for Disaster Management and Risk Reduction (INGD).

According to the INGD database, to which Lusa had access, with data up to 3:30 p.m. (1:30 p.m. Lisbon time) on Tuesday, the floods in various parts of the country have already affected 691,522 people, equivalent to 151,962 families, with 14 deaths - two more than on Monday - 3,447 homes partially destroyed, 771 totally destroyed and 154,797 flooded.

INGD data also reports 45 injured and four missing as a result of these floods since 7 January, at a time when families are still awaiting rescue, especially in southern Mozambique.

Since the beginning of the rainy season in October, including the last few weeks of flooding, 137 people have died in Mozambique, in addition to 148 injured and 812,335 people affected, according to INGD data.

According to today's data, there are currently 100 accommodation centres in operation (11 have since been closed), with 94,657 people. This update also reports that, since 7 January, 229 health facilities and 353 schools, four bridges and 1,336 kilometres of road have been affected.
