Lisbon, Dec. 22, 2025 (Lusa) - The number of unemployed people registered at job centres in Portugal fell by 7.2% in November year-on-year, but rose by 0.6% compared to October, according to data released on Monday by the Institute for Employment and Vocational Training.
According to the Institute for Employment and Vocational Training (IEFP), at the end of November, 299,452 unemployed individuals were registered with employment services on the mainland and in the autonomous regions, representing 67.5% of a total of 443,575 job seekers.
This is lower than in the same month of 2024, which is explained by those registered for less than 12 months (-18,649), those looking for a new job (-18,966), and those over 25 years old (-17,911), according to the IEFP institute.
In a month-on-month comparison, i.e. compared to October, there were 1,730 more people registered at employment centres in November.
Looking at the professional groups of the unemployed registered on the mainland, the most representative were "unskilled workers" (29.9%), "personal services, security and sales workers" (20%), "specialists in the intellectual and scientific areas" (11.1%) and "administrative staff" (10.2%).
In regional terms, unemployment fell year-on-year in November, with the exception of the Algarve, with the largest decrease - 17.5% - recorded in Madeira.
Compared to the previous month, there was a decrease in unemployment in the North, Centre and Lisbon and Tagus Valley regions, but an increase in the others, with the most significant growth in the Algarve region (58.8%).
The IEFP institute also reports that job offers received throughout this month totalled 8,746 across the country, 0.6% less than in November 2024 and a reduction of 25.2% compared to the previous month.
Placements made during November reached 6,830 across the country, 25.6% more than in the same period last year but 16.2% less than in October.
Still on the subject of unemployment statistics, The number of couples with both partners unemployed fell by 9.5% in November, year-on-year, and by 0.6% compared to October, to 4,496, according to data released today by the IEFP.
"Of the total number of unemployed people who are married or in a civil partnership, 8,992 (7.8%) also have a record that their spouse is also registered as unemployed with the Employment Service, totalling 4,496 unemployed couples in November 2025, which represents a drop of 9.5% when compared to the same period last year," according to the IEFP institue's report.
In a month-on-month comparison, the number of couples in which both spouses are unemployed fell by 0.6% compared to October.
