Praia, Dec. 22, 2025 (Lusa) - A new 200 escudo coin (€1.81), commemorating 50 years of Cabo Verde's independence, begins circulating on Monday in the archipelago and is available in three versions - normal, gold and silver, the central bank announced.
"The commemorative coin with a face value of 200 escudos (€1.81), commemorating 50 years of national independence, is a highly symbolic milestone, in which the country celebrates the resilience of its people, who, with courage, determination and pride, have built a sovereign, democratic and stable nation," said the Bank of Cabo Verde (BCV) in a statement.
The coin will be available in three versions: a normal finish in cupronickel (10 grams, 28 millimetres, limit of 5,000 units), a special, shiny, uncirculated finish in Nordic gold (14.7 grams, 33 millimetres, 1,000 units), and a numismatic proof in silver (13.5 grams, 33 millimetres, 1,500 units).
The front features a map of the archipelago, symbolising the territorial unity and diversity of the islands, and the national flag with colours and stars representing the 10 islands, complemented by the inscriptions “freedom, democracy and solidarity”, “50 years” and “1975-2025”.
On the back, the coin displays a combination of the symbols of the Republic and the face value, integrated with palm trees that evoke the historical trajectory and resilience of Cabo Verde's people, reinforcing the national identity and values of the Republic, such as the rule of law, democracy and prosperity, as mentioned in the note.
The coin can be purchased at the Bank of Cabo Verde and from numismatic agents, with distribution to the public being carried out through credit institutions.
The 200 escudo coin now joins the 1, 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 escudo coins (0.009, 0.045, 0.09, 0.18, 0.45 and 0.91 euros, respectively) already in circulation in the country.
