Lisbon, Dec. 17, 2025 (Lusa) - The Portuguese Way of St. James reached the milestone of 100,000 pilgrims in 2025, according to data from the pilgrim office of the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, in Galicia, Spain.
The statistic was released based on the number of people who received the Compostela this year. This certificate attests to the completion of the Way of St. James, Europa Press reported on Tuesday.
According to a statement from the Cathedral of Tui, a total of 100,452 pilgrims had travelled this route by 14 December.
This year's figures represent a 6% increase over last year, it added.
According to statistics consulted today on the website of the pilgrim's office of the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, 38.12% of pilgrims on the Portuguese Way in 2025 were Spanish, 11.88% were Portuguese, and the remaining 50% were from other countries.
The data also reveals that Tui is the most popular starting point for pilgrims on the Portuguese Way. So far this year, 41,553 pilgrims have been registered, representing 41.83% of the walkers who travel this route.
According to statistics from the pilgrimage office of the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, the Portuguese Coastal Way has so far registered 89,265 pilgrims in 2025, with Porto being the most popular starting point.
Of these, 20.02% were Spanish, followed by 12.26% Americans, 10.62% Germans, 6.34% Italians and 5.16% Portuguese. The remaining 45.6% are from other countries.
The French Way of Saint James recorded the highest number of pilgrims, with a total of 241,491, of whom 51.82% were Spanish and the remaining 48.18% were of other nationalities. The most popular starting point was Sarria (Galicia).
