Lusa - Business News - Portugal: EDP to invest €8M in new Spanish hydroelectric power plant

Lisbon, Dec. 9, 2025 (Lusa) - EDP will install a new hydroelectric power plant in Spain, at the Rioseco dam, with an investment of €8 million, of which €4.2 million will be financed by the European Commission's NextGenerationEU programme.

This plant in Sobrescobio will have a capacity of 3.2 megawatts (MW) and is expected to start operating in 2026, generating enough electricity to power around 2,000 households, approximately 8 GWh/year.

Each generator set will have a capacity of 1.6 MW. In addition, as it is 100% renewable energy, it will avoid around 1,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per year, according to EDP.

The new renewable facility will be put into operation in a space where its construction was already planned when the dam was designed and built in the late 1970s.

This project was one of those supported by the Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving (IDAE), which is part of the Spanish Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge, under the programme for innovative renewable energy and storage projects (thermal systems and innovative renewable energies).

"Energy production in hydroelectric power stations has been at the heart of EDP since September 1917, when the La Malva power station in Somiedo came into operation. This facility, which continues to produce energy as it did on its first day, joins the other 10 hydroelectric power stations that EDP currently operates in the region: Proaza, Tanes, Priañes, Salime, Miranda, Caño, San Isidro, Laviana, La Florida and La Barca," reads a statement.

In total, they have 425 MW of installed capacity and produce an average of 880 GWh per year — enough energy to supply 250,000 households annually. From 2026, this new Rioseco power station will add its capacity to this portfolio.
