Lusa - Business News - Guinea-Bissau: Reporters Without Borders denounces press censorship

Bissau, Nov. 27, 2025 (Lusa) - Reporters Without Borders (RSF) on Thursday condemned the censorship imposed by Guinea-Bissau's current military regime, which seized power on Wednesday, for suspending all media outlets, thereby violating the right to information.

"The suspension of the Guinean media is a serious violation of the right to information. The population must be able to be informed about what is happening in the country, particularly in this context of political crisis," said RSF's director for Sub-Saharan Africa, Sadibou Marong, quoted in a statement.

The non-governmental organisation (NGO) denounced "censorship that opens the door to rumours of all kinds and misinformation".

For RSF, the protection and respect for the population's right to information must prevail, and the media must be able to do their work freely and without risk of reprisals.

On Wednesday, the day before the results of the presidential and legislative elections held on 23 November were due to be announced, the head of the presidential military office, Denis N'Canha, announced on Guinea-Bissau television that "all media outlets" would be suspended until further notice, RSF reported.

The NGO also recalled that three Portuguese international public media outlets, RDP África radio, RTP television and Agência Lusa news agency, had not been broadcasting in the country since 15 August, having been suspended by the authorities then in office.

General Horta Inta-A was sworn in today as Guinea-Bissau's transitional president at a ceremony held at the Guinean Armed Forces General Staff Headquarters.

The military announced on Wednesday the dismissal of President Umaro Sissoco Embaló, suspended the electoral process and the media, and imposed a curfew.

The elections, which took place without incident, were held without the presence of the main opposition party, the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cabo Verde (PAIGC), and its candidate, Domingos Simões Pereira, who were excluded from the race and declared their support for opposition candidate Fernando Dias da Costa.

Simões Pereira was arrested, and the opposition is denouncing the military takeover as a manoeuvre to prevent the announcement of the election results.
