Lisbon, Nov. 11, 2025 (Lusa) - Meo will have around three kilometres of optical fibre and 44 kilometres of UTP network cable installed at the Web Summit, maintaining the capacity to support 130,000 devices simultaneously wirelessly, while also testing a new technology.
According to data released on Tuesday by Web Summit's technology partner since 2016, Meo Arena and FIL are reinforced with 420 access points and 700 antennas, as well as 180 switches, totalling 920 access points, 1,700 antennas and 320 managed switches.
The operator also has six optical fibre accesses at 10 gigabits per second (Gbps) and more than 170 workers involved in the event, in an operation that took two months to prepare.
Meo's presence at the technology event was marked by the first connection in a real environment of 50G-PON technology, which the operator considers "a new generation solution that multiplies the current XGS-PON capacity of 10 Gbps by five".
According to Meo, the test of this project serves to validate this solution, developed by Altice Labs, in real network conditions and in a production environment, "through functional and performance tests that credibly prove the technology's operability".
The implementation took place between Picoas and the Oriente area, where the technology summit is taking place, and "its main objective is to reinforce the transmission infrastructure of Meo's 5G mobile network".
According to the operator, this new technology should "ensure greater stability and capacity in data transport" on the 5G network.
