Brussels, Nov. 3, 2025 (Lusa) - In 2024, Portugal had 9.2% of workers at risk of poverty, ranking ninth among member states and one percentage point above the European Union (EU) average of 8.2 %, Eurostat announced on Monday.

Among EU countries, the highest rate of people over 18 who were working and at risk of poverty was 13.4% in Luxembourg, followed by Bulgaria (11.8%) and Spain (11.2%).

On the other hand, the lowest rates were in Finland (2.8%), the Czech Republic (3.6%) and Belgium (4.3%).

The phenomenon affects more men than women in the EU (9.0 % against 7.3 %) and in 22 member states, including Portugal (11.4 % and 8.8 % respectively).

In Germany, the rates were the same for men and women, while in the Czech Republic, Latvia, Cyprus and Luxembourg the rates were higher for women than for men.

The at-risk-of-poverty rate is the proportion of people with an equivalised disposable income below the at-risk-of-poverty threshold, which is set at 60% of the national median equivalised disposable income after social transfers.
