Praia, Oct. 29, 2025 (Lusa) - The African Development Bank (AfDB) has announced a contribution of $700,000 (around €600,000) to the Cabo Verde government's emergency response to storm Erin, which killed nine people on the island of São Vicente in August.
"The funds provided by the bank will be used to buy food" and "deliver water to the affected communities", reads the document detailing the support, dated Monday, released today and consulted by Lusa.
The food will be bought locally in an operation to ensure "that the affected populations have access to shelter, drinking water, food, health care and other essential needs".
The support will also be used to repair 21 water catchments, several kilometres of irrigation canals, pipes and reservoirs, both to supply water for consumption and for agricultural use.
The Cabo Verde government announced a week ago that the emergency intervention, which will last until 2026, is budgeted at €45 million and that the money has been guaranteed thanks to the archipelago's emergency funds (€17 million) and the support of partners.
A resilient reconstruction plan was also announced, which is being prepared and has an indicative value of €350 million, to be implemented over 10 years.
The Cabo Verde's government hopes that half will be ensured by partners, through donations, concessional financing, multilateral guarantees or conversion of debt into a climate fund, so that the disbursement does not affect the country's macroeconomic indicators and exchange rate stability.
