Lusa - Business News - Portugal: No more monkfish after next Tuesday, quota exhausted

Lisbon, Oct. 16, 2025 (Lusa) - Portugal has used 95% of its monkfish fishing quota and this catch will be prohibited from 00:00 next Tuesday, the Directorate-General for Natural Resources, Safety and Maritime Services (DGRM) warned on Thursday.

"Considering the catch data made by the Portuguese fleet of the monkfish stock (‘lophiidae’) in zones eight c, nine, 10 and EU waters of CECAF zone 34.1.1, it is reported that quota utilisation has reached 95%," reads a note from the DGRM.

Zone eight c corresponds to the Bay of Biscay-Meridional, zone nine to Portuguese waters and zone 10 to the Azores Bank.

As of 00:00 on 21 October, fishing for monkfish is prohibited.

Landings will be limited to by-catches of up to 5% of the total landed per vessel on each fishing trip.

The DGRM is a central service of the State's direct administration, with administrative autonomy, whose objective is the development of maritime safety and services, the implementation of fisheries policies and the preservation of resources.
