Lusa - Business News - Mozambique: Relatives of 2021 bus accident demand compensation payments

Maputo, Oct. 16, 2025 (Lusa) - The relatives of the victims of the road accident that caused 32 deaths in 2021 in Mozambique demanded on Thursday that the Maputo court enforce the judgment that obliges state insurer Emose to pay €443,000 in compensation.

"What we want is the execution of the judgement because the judgement has already been read and has to be enforced," one of the family representatives told the media outside the Maputo Provincial Court in southern Mozambique.

A group of relatives of the victims of the accident that killed 32 people in 2021, in Maluana, Maputo province, protested today outside the Maputo Provincial Court to demand explanations about the delay in executing the judgement that obliges the Mozambican state insurance company Emose and the transport company Nhancale, owner of the bus involved in the accident, to pay 33 million meticais (€443,000 at the current exchange rate) in compensation.

The court decision was handed down in 2022 by the Manhiça District Court, in Maputo province, and in August of the same year, Emose appealed the judgment because the carrier's policy had expired at the time of the accident.

"They're constantly giving us hope and, in the end, everyone runs away. Nobody is helping us," lamented another family member.

"It costs us money to go to court or to Emose, and so far we haven't had any success (...) and if they don't help us, next week we're going to the Presidency [of the Republic of Mozambique]," said another family member, who also complained about the length of the judicial process.

The road accident, considered to be the most serious ever recorded in Mozambique, took place on 3 July 2021 in Maluana, in the Manhiça district, along National Road No. 1 (EN1), causing 32 deaths and 28 injuries.

The tragedy involved two lorries and a bus that tried to overtake, hit one of the lorries and overturned.

The EN1 has been the scene of serious road accidents, especially on the stretch that crosses the Manhiça district (in the south of the country), with several fatalities and almost always involving public transport.
