ANA-MPA - All aboard: large-scale multifaceted show arrives at Athens Intern'l Airport

The nonprofit Artefact Athens group is presenting a contemporary art exhibition titled 'all aboard' at the Athens International Airport 'Eleftherios Venizelos' from October 9 to November 9, in the first-ever large-scale international show at a functioning Greek airport, and one of the few such shows globally.

According to a press release, all aboard includes 40 artists from various generations and countries, and will be shown at the Express Facility building, which runs parallel to the western runway.

Its organizers said that the exhibition attempts to set up a multifaceted experience centered on the meeting of modern art with architectural memory and the use of a space in waiting. Beyond the physical existence of the airport, the exhibition touches on issues of existential nature and focuses on the power of transitioning as an experience. It explores standing still and movement as existential fields, examining whether changing spaces is about evolution or escape.

Participating artists are using installations, sculptures, videos, performative actions and paintings to express this multi-level sensation. The terminal's audio and visual codes, along with the noise from aircraft, become the background that intensifies the emotional vibrations incorporated in the act of travelling.

Visitors are called on to reexamine their stance, not simply as passengers but as joint creators of an existential space. What does it mean to be in motion? How do individual and collective stories affect our relationship with space and time? These are questions to explore not simply limited to the ground, but projected into space. The airport becomes an introduction to a takeoff, whether literal or metaphorical, and provides a sudden sense of infinity, how small we are before the vastness of the unknown.
