CNA - Cyprus President announces projects of €230 mln in Paphos

President Nikos Christodoulides announced more than 75 development projects for Paphos, with a total budget exceeding €230 million on Tuesday, underlining the government’s commitment to balanced regional growth and long-term strategic planning.

Speaking during a meeting with local authorities and stakeholders in Paphos, President Christodoulides said that the district is gaining increased strategic importance in the fields of defence and security, through the upgrade of the Andreas Papandreou Air Base in cooperation with the United States and the modernisation of key infrastructure.

“The government continues steadily with the implementation of our vision for a Cyprus that changes and develops in a balanced way, giving Paphos the place it deserves,” the President said.

Among the landmark projects is the long-anticipated Paphos Marina, designed to host up to 1,000 leisure boats in an area of 165,000 square meters, which he said will transform the city into a top maritime and tourism destination, boosting the economy and creating new jobs.

In the fields of culture and heritage, the government is advancing with a Cultural Park and amphitheater in Acheleia, the digital upgrade of the Archaeological Museum, and preservation works at key monuments, including the Ancient Odeon and the pedestrian bridges of Chrysopolitissa. Education projects include new and modernized schools in Chlorakas, Timi, and Ayios Kendeas, while the expansion of the Emba Lyceum and Technical School is underway.

Health investments totaling €8 million will upgrade the Paphos General Hospital, including improvements to emergency services, pediatrics, and gynecology, alongside the creation of a new pulmonology clinic. Social welfare initiatives include a model care center for the elderly and a new nursing home in Chlorakas.

Christodoulides also pointed to major transport projects, such as the Paphos–Polis highway, new bypasses, and expanded connections to the airport, aimed at improving road safety, easing congestion, and strengthening growth potential.

Later in the day, addressing an audience at the Attikon Cultural Venue in Paphos, the President stressed that Cyprus on a “path of steady and strong growth,” despite regional and European geopolitical challenges.

“We continue our upward course with one of the highest growth rates in the European Union for yet another year, even as Europe’s strongest economies are under pressure,” he said.

President Christodoulides also said that consistent fiscal discipline and responsible economic management are paying off. Public debt is expected to fall below 60% of GDP before the end of 2025, a milestone that, he noted, strengthens the country’s credibility and sends a message of stability.

“Only with a strong, resilient, and shielded economy can we implement the policies and projects that improve citizens’ quality of life, while at the same time exercising targeted social policy,” he added.
