ANSA - Jacobs, Tamberi lick wounds after disappointment at worlds

Sprinter says he's considering quitting

Italian sprinter Marcell Jacobs and high-jumper Gianmarco Tamberi are both licking their wounds after failing to make the finals of their respective events at the 2025 athletics world championships in Tokyo, four years after they both won Olympic gold in the Japanese capital.

Jacobs, 30, went as far as to say that he is considering quitting after his poor showing in the 100 metres at the weekend.

"I experienced one of the best days of my life here," Jacobs said.
"I live the life of an athlete 24/7, 365 days a year.
"I've celebrated many times, but I've had sad days three times as many. Honestly, it's hard to keep catching up on seasons and injuries.
"I have gold and silver medals at home, no regrets, you have to realise when it's time to give up...
"You can't live in the past. I no longer feel like the Marcell I once was; my head tells me it can't keep dealing with all these disappointments".
Tamberi said he knew he wasn't in great shape before the world championships but, if he had realized how things would go, he wouldn't have bothered turning up.
He added, however, they he still intends to keep going until the Los Angeles Olympics.
"For the first time I can't wait to get back to training," he said.
"I would make the decision to continue until Los Angeles again".
