Lisbon, Sept. 1, 2025 (Lusa) - Electricity consumption in Portugal rose 3.4% in August compared to the same month last year, driven by high temperatures in the country, the electricity and natural gas network managing company, REN, said on Monday.
Between January and August, electricity consumption grew 2.5% compared to the same period last year.
According to the company, weather conditions in August led to lower solar and wind energy production.
"In August, weather conditions led to lower than average levels for both photovoltaic and wind energy production, with the respective indices standing at 0.90 and 0.94, below the historical average of 1," the statement said.
From January to August, gas consumption grew by around 12% year-on-year, with a 135% increase in the electricity production segment and a 9% decline in the conventional segment.
In terms of hydroelectric power, renewable production supplied 54% of consumption, non-renewable energy supplied 17% and the remaining 29% was imported.
"In hydroelectric production, although inflows were higher than average, these figures are not particularly significant as they relate to the summer period," REN said in a statement.
According to the company, from January to August, the hydroelectric productivity index was 1.40, wind productivity was 0.99, and solar productivity was 0.89.
In the same period, renewable production supplied 71% of consumption, divided between hydroelectric with 30%, wind with 24%, photovoltaic with 12%, and biomass with 5%.
Natural gas production supplied 14% of consumption, while the remaining 15% corresponded to imports.
