Lusa - Business News - Cabo Verde: Back-to.school subsidies paid from Friday for 15 September return

Praia, Sept. 1, 2025 (Lusa) - Families with children registered with the National Social Security Institute (INPS) in Cabo Verde by August 31 will start receiving a back-to-school allowance from Friday, the government announced on Monday.

The measure aims to "ensure more support and equal opportunities at the start of the new school year", said Cabo Verde's government.

Children aged 4 to 15 will receive the support automatically, while young people aged 15 and over will have to provide proof of school attendance.

The amount varies between 2,500 and 4,000 escudos (€21.77 to €36.28), depending on age, and payment starts on 5 September.

The Minister of Education, Amadeu Cruz, announced last week that the new school year will commence on 15 September nationwide, including the islands recently affected by the natural disaster, such as São Vicente, Santo Antão, and São Nicolau, which will host the official opening ceremony.

In total, around 130,000 pupils and 7,500 teachers from primary to secondary schools will return to school on the 15th.
