Lisbon, July 24, 2025 (Lusa) - The government has extended until 31 December 2027, “on an exceptional basis”, the transitional period for compliance with the age limit of less than 10 years for vehicles established for the taxi sector.
The Secretary of State for Mobility, Cristina Pinto Dias, signed a decree published today in the Diário da República that extends the deadline for the transitional rules of Decree No. 451/2023 of 22 December, which regulates the characteristics and identification rules for vehicles used for passenger transport by taxi.
According to that decree, taxis “must be less than 10 years old from the date of first registration”, and taxi operators initially were given until 31 December 2025 to comply with this requirement.
The decree published today takes into account that “the international context of growing instability, resulting from the conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, as well as changes in the commercial tariff paradigm in the American economy, which generate uncertainty, volatility and disruptions in global supply chains, anticipate a challenging situation in terms of the ability to make the necessary investments for fleet renewal and create obstacles in supply chains, requiring the industry to address constraints in supplying goods”.
Therefore, to ensure the continuity of the public taxi service “without disruptions, the government is proceeding, on an exceptional basis, to extend the transitional period for compliance with the age limit that it previously established until 31 December 2027”.
The government also pointed out that passenger transport by taxi is “a public service, guided by universality and availability, especially in areas of low demand, where it is a key factor in promoting mobility and combating isolation”.
