Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Minister hopes to bring forward 80% renewables target to this year

Lisbon, May 27, 2025 (Lusa) - Portugal's minister for the environment and energy announced on Tuesday that the country will bring forward by one year its target of integrating 80% of renewable energy into its electricity production.

This target was originally set for 2026 under the National Energy and Climate Plan (PNEC), which also provides for a 55% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.

"We have seen very positive results in the first few months of this year," said Maria da Graça Carvalho, on the sidelines of the Second Energy Conference of the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP).

The increase in hydro and wind energy has been decisive, leading the minister to consider that "it is very likely that Portugal will achieve this target, initially set for 2026, before the end of this year".

In 2024, renewable sources accounted for 71% of electricity consumed - the highest figure ever - with hydroelectric power (28%) in the lead, followed by wind (27%), solar photovoltaic (10%) and biomass (6%).

Electricity produced from non-renewable sources, mainly natural gas, accounted for only 10% of consumption, while the rest was supplied by imports, which reached a record 10.5 TWh.
