Lusa - Business News - Portugal: More than half of companies hold online meetings

Lisbon, May 16, 2025 (Lusa) - More than half of companies with 10 or more employees held remote meetings via the Internet in 2024, which is above the European average, it was announced on Friday.

Last year, 53.9% of all companies with 10 or more employees held remote meetings, while the average for the European Union (EU) as a whole was 52.9%, according to Statistics Portugal (INE).

To mark World Telecommunication and Information Society Day, celebrated on 17 May, INE pointsedout that the proportion of companies that held remote meetings increases with the number of employees working for the company: 96.0% of companies with 250 or more employees held online meetings, as did 83.6% of those employing between 50 and 249 people and 48.0% of those with between 10 and 49 employees.

In addition, almost all companies are connected to the Internet via broadband and, in terms of connection speed, companies with 50 to 249 employees and 250 or more employees had the highest rates of use of speeds equal to or greater than 1 Gbit/s (34.5% and 35.5%, respectively).

These figures are higher than those recorded in companies with 10 to 49 employees (20.5%), but Portugal still ranked above the EU average, as 15.1% of companies with 10 or more employees in the European Union had connections with speeds of 1 Gbit/s or higher. Portugal was again above the EU average, since in the European context 15.1% of companies with 10 or more employees in the European Union had connections with speeds equal to or greater than 1 Gbit/s in 2024.
