Luanda, May 9, 2025 (Lusa) - Angola's education minister said that 2,573 new schools are needed to reduce the number of students studying in poor conditions and the number of new pupils entering the education system, local media reported on Friday.

According to Luísa Grilo, who was speaking to the press on the sidelines of the 12th Conference on Teaching and Learning and the 14th Round Table of the African Federation of Education Regulatory Authorities, which is taking place until today in the Angolan province of Huíla, this number of schools, with 12 classrooms, is necessary.

Luísa Grilo, quoted by the Angolan news agency Angop, pointed out that this school year saw 80 new schools, bringing the total to 12,627 schools across the country.

The minister stressed that there was also a shortage of teachers, estimated at more than 60,000 professionals, a figure that will be updated to assess the pupil-teacher ratio.

Grilo considered it a "difficult task" to be a teacher in this Portuguese-speaking country, due to the difficulties faced in helping pupils assimilate the knowledge.

"It is a pity that we do not look at teaching as the profession of professions, because no one can graduate without teachers, so they should be more cherished and valued," said Luísa Grilo.
