Lisbon, May 7, 2025 (Lusa) - Interconnection capacity between Portugal and Spain will resume on Thursday, but will be limited to 1,000 MW in the direction of importing into Portugal until at least Monday 12 May, according to a notice published on the website of REN - Redes Energéticas Nacionais, Portugal's national grids operator.
Portugal has not imported electricity from Spain since the massive power outage of 28 April, in line with a decision adopted as part of the "stabilisation process" for the national electricity system. From Thursday the connection is to be partially re-established, but limited to 1,000 MW in the importing direction.
On 28 April, a widespread power cut left mainland Portugal, Spain and Andorra, as well as part of France, practically without power.
Airports closed and rail and road transport was disrupted, with traffic congestion in major cities as traffic lights were not working, and there were fuel shortages as a result of the blackout.
The European Network of Transmission System Managers announced the creation of a committee to investigate the causes of the outage, which it described as "exceptional and serious" for the Iberian countries, with implications for the wider system.
