Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Government calls on rail unions to cancel strike after pay offer made

Lisbon, May 6, 2025 (Lusa) - Portugal's government on Tuesday called on trade unions representing employees of CP, the state-owned rail operator, to call off a strike that it said is "empty of objectives" - stating that it has presented a proposal for wage increases worth €5.75 million.

It said that it had not received a response to this offer.

"There has been total good faith on the part of the government, but so far there has been no openness on the part of the unions,2 lamented the minister of infrastructure, Miguel Pinto Luz, who was speaking at a press conference in Lisbon.

CP had earlier warned of the possibility of "major disruptions" to services from Wednesday until 14 May, due to strikes called by various unions and because legal minimum services have not been defined by the Arbitration Court of the Social Economic Council - the tripartite body that oversees industrial relations in Portugal.
