Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Domestic gas price highest in EU in purchasing power parity - Eurostat

Brussels, May 6, 2025 (Lusa) - The average price of domestic gas in the European Union (EU) rose in the second half of 2024 to €12/100 kWh, with Portugal having the highest price (€16.6) in terms of purchasing power parity, according to Eurostat.

In the EU, according to data from the European statistical service, the average price of gas for domestic consumption - including taxes and duties - rose in the second half of the year to €12, compared to €11.24 in the same period last year and €1.68 per 100 kWh between January and June 2024.

This increase, the highest figure for domestic gas prices since the series began (in 2008), interrupted a series of three half-yearly declines.

Expressed in purchasing power parity, Portugal recorded the highest domestic gas price between July and December 2024 (€16.6 per kWh) - above the average for the same period (€16.3) and the previous half-year (€14.42) - followed by Italy (€16.49) and Sweden (€16.08).

The lowest prices were paid by domestic gas consumers in Poland (€4.72 per 100 kWh), Hungary (€6.67) and Croatia (€5.57).

In purely euro terms (not adjusted for purchasing power parity), Sweden had the highest prices at €18.93 per 100 kWh, followed by the Netherlands (€16.71) and Italy (€15.86), with Portugal in fourth place (€13.66/kWh).

In contrast, Hungary (€3.20 per 100 kWh), Croatia (€4.60) and Romania (€5.40) had the lowest prices.

According to Eurostat, the increase in gas prices for domestic consumption is largely due to tax increases in many EU countries, as previous relief measures have been reduced.
