Lusa - Business News - Mozambique: Few health, education measures in 100 days of government - Renamo

Maputo, May 2, 2025 (Lusa) - The Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo) opposition party on Friday criticised the lack of "effective solutions" to demands in the health and education sectors during the first 100 days of the government, pointing out that they were marked by the continuing economic crisis.

"The economic crisis continues to deeply affect the country and the structural problems plaguing essential sectors such as health and education remain without effective solutions," Renamo spokesman Marcial Macome said at a press conference in Maputo.

On 28 April, Mozambican president Daniel Chapo announced that "strategic actions" had been implemented during the first 100 days of government, including investments in infrastructure, public health, and economic, social and political inclusion programmes, with at least 92 of the 96 indicators that made up the government's action plan having been met.

"This commitment will not be limited to the first 100 days of government, when we did not yet have financial resources, as everyone knows that the budget had not then been approved, but we managed to make all these omelettes without eggs," promised Daniel Chapo during the presentation of the results for the first 100 days of government.

For Renamo, this period was marked by ‘persistent challenges,’ especially in the economy, noting that the actions in the first 100 days did not "show significant impact on the lives of Mozambicans."

By way of illustration, Marcial Macome pointed out that the education and health sectors still face difficulties, giving as examples strikes and work stoppages with delays in salary payments and continuous requests for improved working conditions, although he admitted that there had been ‘efforts’ to pay overtime arrears.

Renamo also questioned the ‘lasting impact’ of housing projects and financing for youth entrepreneurship initiatives and criticised the country's president for his speech about ‘omelettes without eggs’ in reference to financial constraints.

"This justification cannot be used indefinitely to explain the lack of progress because one of two things is true: either the president is a bad cook who did not check the pantry to see if there were any eggs, or he let the kleptocracy that makes up his government eat the eggs," said Marcial Macome.
