APS - Algeria-Canada: Promising prospects for strengthening economic partnership in energy, mines

ALGIERS-The Minister of State, Minister of Energy, Mines and Renewable Energy, Mohamed Arkab, received on Tuesday, in Algiers, the Ambassador of Canada to Algeria, Robin Lynn Wettlaufer, the ministry said in a press release.

The meeting, which took place at the ministry’s headquarters and was attended by the Secretary of State to the Minister of Energy, in charge of Renewable Energy, Noureddine Yassaâ, along with ministry officials, provided an opportunity to exchange views on ways to enhance bilateral cooperation between the two countries in energy, mining, and renewable energy sectors.

According to the same source, participants also explored new investment opportunities aimed at expanding partnerships between Algerian and Canadian businesses.

In renewable energy, the two parties discussed the possibility of developing joint projects in the areas of wind energy, energy storage, innovative technical solutions, green hydrogen, training, technology transfer and human skills development.

Arkab reviewed the reforms carried out by Algeria, particularly through the new laws on investment, hydrocarbons and mining, emphasizing that these legislative frameworks represent “a basis for attracting investments and facilitating access for foreign operators to the national market,” according to the same source.

In this respect, the Minister of State called on Canadian companies to seize investment opportunities available in Algeria, particularly in the fields of exploration, production and transformation of hydrocarbons, energy industry, seawater desalination and local manufacturing of related equipment.

Arkab expressed Algeria’s willingness to benefit from Canadian expertise in the mining industry, particularly geological studies, mapping, exploitation and transformation of mineral resources, not to mention strategic and critical minerals, given Canada’s position in this sector at the global level.

For her part, the Canadian ambassador welcomed the level of relations between the two countries, while expressing the interest of Canadian companies in strengthening their presence in the Algerian market, particularly in priority sectors.

She further highlighted the importance of Algerian participation in economic and investment forums planned in Canada during this year, to discover opportunities for exchange of expertise and strengthen cooperation between actors in the energy and mining sectors.
