Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Minister acknowledges international brownout may be cyber attack

Lisbon, April 28, 2025 (Lusa) - The deputy minister for territorial cohesion acknowledged on Monday that the energy brownout affecting Portugal could be due to a cyber-attack, adding that it is also affecting Spain, France and Germany.

Speaking to RTP 3, Manuel Castro Almeida, asked about the possibility of a cyber-attack, replied that "there is that possibility, but it hasn't been confirmed".

"There is indeed that possibility," said the minister, emphasising that he still had little information and that what he had was not confirmed.

"I know that it covers several European countries - Portugal, Spain, France and Germany, and I believe Morocco as well," said Castro Almeida, for whom the issue is “something on a large scale which, given its size, is compatible with a cyber-attack”, "But this is unconfirmed information," he reiterated.
