Praia, April 15, 2025 (Lusa) - The Bank of Cabo Verde (BCV) announced on Tuesday that it will put 1,000 and 2,000 escudos banknotes (equivalent to around €10 and €20, respectively) into circulation with new details and security markings.
To the naked eye, the design of the banknotes will remain similar, with the 1,000 escudos note evoking Codé di Dona, precursor of the funaná musical style, and the 2,000 note honouring Cesária Évora, ambassador of another of the archipelago's musical styles, morna.
Analysed in detail, the new banknotes have details that differentiate them from the current ones.
The BCV announced in a statement that they will "improve certain characteristics, with the aim of incorporating technological advances that provide greater security and durability and make it easier for the public to recognise their integrity when handling them".
Some of the differences include details in holographic bands or those only visible under ultraviolet light, among others.
"The new 1,000 and 2,000 escudos banknotes will circulate at the same time as the current banknotes," in other words, both "must be accepted as a means of payment."
The banknotes will be distributed to the public via credit institutions, he concluded.
