Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Lisbon region Odivelas-Loures metro tender relaunched on Tuesday

Loures, Lisbon, April 15, 2025 (Lusa) - The tender for the construction of the Odivelas - Loures light railway in the greater Lisbon region will be relaunched on Tuesday, with a figure of €600 million, the mayor of Loures told Lusa.

The relaunch of the tender for the construction of the so-called Violet Line is the responsibility of the Lisbon Metro and will be marked at a ceremony presided over by the Minister for Infrastructure, Miguel Pinto Luz.

In the first tender for the Violet Line last year, the bids submitted by Zagope and the Mota-Engil consortium were rejected for exceeding the base price, which was €450 million.

However, in March of this year, the Cabinet approved a proposal to increase financing of the Violet Line by €150 million to the total cost of the investment, allowing for an increase of around 28% in the value of the contract, to a base price of €600 million.

Speaking to Lusa, the mayor of Loures, Ricardo Leão (PS), expressed his confidence in the success of the new public tender, emphasising the fact that it provides for increased funding and a shorter expected response time for competitors.

"The response time for the tender is much shorter than last year, since the market already knows the proposals. Therefore, the response time is 45 days," said the mayor.

Also according to Ricardo Leão, based on the tendering phases and the Court of Auditors' approval, the work could start at the end of this year and be completed in 2029.

Funding for the Lisbon Metro Violet Line, previously planned with funds from the Recovery and Resilience Plan, will come from the European Investment Bank, the state budget and the Environmental Fund.

The Violet Line, 11.5 kilometres long, includes 17 stations: nine in the district of Loures (which will serve the parishes of Loures, Santo António dos Cavaleiros and Frielas, covering a distance of around 6.4 kilometres) and eight in the district of Odivelas (to serve the parishes of Póvoa de Santo Adrião and Olival de Basto, Odivelas, Ramada and Caneças), covering a total distance of around 5.1 kilometres.

The stations will be of different types: 12 surface stations, three underground stations and two stations in open trenches.
