Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Stocks rise more than 1% on opening with Galp climbing 2.4%

Lisbon, April 14, 2025 (Lusa) - The Lisbon stock market was trading higher on Monday with the PSI advancing more than 1% and Galp shares leading the gains and rising 2.44% to €13.03.

At around 09:10 in Lisbon, the PSI maintained the opening trend and advanced 1.07% to 6,589.96 points, with 11 shares rising, three falling (EDP Renováveis, -0.34% to €7.43, REN, -018% to €2.76 and Navigator, -0.06% to €3.24) and one holding its ground (Ibersol at €8.70).

Galp's shares were followed by BCP, NOS and Mota-Engil, which rose 1.91% to €0.53, 1.44% to €4.24 and 1.13% to €3.23.

Jerónimo Martins, Altri and Semapa shares rose 1.10% to €20.24, 0.89% to €6.11 and 0.84% to €15.61.

More moderately, shares in Corticeira Amorim and Sonae rose 0.81% to €7.44 and 0.79% to €1.03.

The other two shares to rise were CTT and EDP, up 0.75% to €6.70 and 0.36% to €3.07.

The main European stock markets opened higher today, in line with Wall Street and Asia, after the US announced a temporary exemption from tariffs on the technology sector.

The euro was rising to $1.1402, a new high since 10 February 2022 on the Frankfurt exchange, up from $1.1355 on Friday.

The price of an ounce of gold, a safe haven asset, was falling to $3,230.95 per ounce, down from a new all-time high of $3,237.61 on Friday.

The United States announced this weekend that it was waiving tariffs on many technology products.

However, US President Donald Trump said on Sunday that he will soon announce the true scope of the new tariffs on these products, something analysts at Link Securities, quoted by Efe, believe could ‘completely change the behaviour of the stock markets immediately’.

Wall Street finished higher last Friday.

At this hour, the futures of the main Wall Street indicators are pointing to a positive opening, pending the presentation of more results, today it's Goldman Sachs' turn.

The New York Federal Reserve's one-year inflation expectations will also be released today.

In Asia, in the early morning, Tokyo's Nikkei gained 1.18% and Hong Kong's Hang Seng rose 2.12%. The Shanghai Stock Exchange rose by 0.76 %.

The price of Brent oil for June delivery, the benchmark in Europe, fell to $64.66, against $64.76 in the previous session on a day when the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) will update its forecasts on the evolution of oil demand and supply.
