Lisbon, April 1, 2025 (Lusa) - Portugal's automotive market in the first quarter was down 1.1%, with 67,788 new vehicles put into circulation, the ACAP - Automobile Association of Portugal said on Tuesday.
In March alone, 27,787 cars were registered in Portugal, 5.9% more than in the same month in 2024, it said in a statement.
With regard to passenger cars, in the first quarter as a whole, registrations "totalled 58,545 units, which translated into a slight negative variation of 0.8% compared to the same period in 2024," the ACAP said.
Almost two thirds (65.1%) of new passenger cars were powered by other types of energy, such as electric and hybrid, and of these 20.8% were electric.
In March, 24,578 new passenger cars were registered in Portugal, a year-on-year increase of 7.8%.
As for light goods vehicles, March saw a drop of 8.5% year-on-year, with 2,600 units registered, ACAP said. But in the quarter as a whole, the market totalled 7,646 units, still representing an increase of 0.7% on the same period in 2024.
The association also noted that in the heavy goods vehicle market, which includes passenger and goods vehicles, there was an increase of 1.3% in March, with 609 vehicles in this category being sold.
In the quarter, "registrations in this category totalled 1,597 units, representing a 15.3% drop in the market compared to the same period in 2024," it added.
