Lisbon, April 1, 2025 (Lusa) - The government announced on Tuesday that incumbent train operator CP—Comboios de Portugal carried 32 million passengers until February, 2.5 million more than in the same period in 2024, and revenues increased by 3.9% to €35.2 million.
In a statement, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Housing said that CP ‘recorded an increase of 8.5% in the number of passengers’ in the first two months of the year, compared to the same period in 2024, rising from 29.5 million to 32 million.
‘In the same period, CP's revenue also rose by 3.9%, from €33.9 million to €35.2 million,’ said the government.
According to the government, ‘the Portuguese are travelling more and more by train, thanks to the Green Rail Pass (PFV)’, with the Regional service recording an increase in demand of 121.4%, with the number of passengers rising from two million to 4.6 million by the end of February.
Demand for Intercidades increased by 54% in that period, from around 466,000 passengers to 718,000, of which 323,000 were bookings with the PFV.
On the Alfa Pendular service, where the Green Rail Pass is not used, the number of passengers rose by 2.4%, from 273,000 to 280,000.
The €20 a month Green Rail Pass came into force on 21 October last year, and according to the ministry, 220,000 tickets have been sold so far, 40% of which to new customers.
‘The Green Rail Pass, it can be concluded, has had a strong impact on demand for Regional and Intercidades trains, without affecting the increase in demand for the Alfa Pendular or the growth in CP's revenues,’ emphasised the ministry led by Miguel Pinto Luz, who welcomed these results.
