Lisbon, March 25, 2025 (Lusa) - Portugal's prime minister, Luís Montenegro, will attend the meeting on peace and security for Ukraine organised by French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris on Thursday.
The information was released by the prime minister's office, according to which Montenegro will be at the Élysée Palace from 09:45 (8:45 in Lisbon).
The meeting, according to the same press release, will be attended by Portugal, Belgium, Canada, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Turkey, Ukraine and the United Kingdom, as well as the secretary general of NATO, the president of the European Commission and the president of the European Council, former Portuguese prime minister António Costa.
This summit follows meetings held in Paris and London in recent weeks to provide "security guarantees" for Ukraine, which will be invaded by Russian troops in February 2022, at a time when US President Donald Trump is trying to broker a possible peace deal with Russia.
The aim is to "finalise" work on "short-term" military support for Ukraine, on "a sustainable Ukrainian army model to prevent future Russian invasions" and on the "security guarantees that European armies can provide", including ground deployments on Ukrainian soil, the French President said last week.
On 15 March, the Portuguese prime minister participated by videoconference in the London meeting to achieve a ceasefire in Ukraine and stressed that Portugal will stand by its allies "to ensure peace and security today and in the future".
Luís Montenegro joined the meeting by videoconference from the Ministry of National Defence in Lisbon, where the President of the European Council, António Costa, was also present.
