Peniche, Portugal, March 23, 2025 (Lusa) - The action has returned to the sea at the Portuguese leg of the World Surf League (WSL) main circuit, in Peniche, after four days of waiting, and the winners of the event at Supertubos Beach will be decided on Sunday.
In the men's section, the round of 16 will be contested in a simultaneous heat format, with a duel between Australians in the first heat, with Jack Robinson (finalist in Peniche in the 2023 edition) facing Liam O'Brien.
Then the Brazilian Yago Dora takes on the Hawaiian Imaikalani deVault and, in the third heat, the Australian Ethan Ewing (runner-up in the 2024 Portuguese event) battles the American Cole Houshmand.
In the fourth heat, two-time world champion Filipe Toledo (2022 and 2023), a Brazilian who won Supertubos 10 years ago, will face South African Jordy Smith, a three-time runner-up in Portugal (2010, 2014, and 2019).
Next up are the matches between Brazil's Ítalo Ferreira, world champion in 2019 and winner at Supertubos in 2018 and 2019, and Australian rookie Joel Vaughan, Indonesia's Rio Waida and Japan's Kanoa Igarashi, France's Marco Mignot and Hawaii's Seth Moniz and finally, in the eighth heat, Italy's Leonardo Fioravanti and Hawaii's Barron Mamiya.
In the women's event, the competition is already at a more advanced stage. The USA's Caroline Marks, World Champion in 2023 and Olympian in 2024, and winner of the Portuguese event in 2019, will discuss the first semi-final with Australia's Molly Picklum. Canadian rookie Erin Brooks and Hawaiian Gabriela Bryan will contest the second semi-final.
The Meo Rip Curl Pro Portugal, the only European leg of the world's elite circuit, began on March 15 at Supertubos Beach in Peniche and, according to official information from the organisation, will conclude today.
