Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Around 2,000 customers still without power

Lisbon, March 21, 2025 (Lusa) - Around 2,000 customers supplied by E-Redes - Distribuição de Eletricidade were still without power this morning due to the effects of bad weather in the districts of Leiria and Coimbra and the Lisbon and Setúbal Metropolitan Area, the company said.

According to a statement from the distributor released today, of the peak number of customers affected nationwide, namely 185,000 customers, at 01:00 on Thursday, the company says it has "progressed with the restoration", so that at 01:00 today the number affected was 2,000 customers.

According to the company's latest update, this universe is still awaiting interventions on the low-voltage network, which is mostly concentrated in Coimbra, Leiria, the Lisbon metropolitan area, and Setúbal.

According to the distributor, "at this time [08:15] we have a stabilised network".

"Despite the return of heavy rain and wind during the early hours of the morning, we estimate that we will be able to resolve these situations by the end of this morning," the statement said.

E-Redes also added that it activated its Operational Crisis Action Plan on Wednesday due to the bad weather forecasts, "with the entire operational device dedicated to the state of alert in force, in close liaison with Civil Protection and other authorities".

"At around 10 p.m. [on Wednesday], the effects of Storm Martinho began to cause major constraints on the electricity grid, especially in the south central area, progressively moving northwards throughout the early hours of the 20th," the statement said.

Civil Protection recorded 8,600 incidents in mainland Portugal between 00:00 on Wednesday and 10 p.m. on Thursday due to the passage of the depression. The most affected regions were Lisbon and the Tagus Valley.

According to the ANEPC, the most common type of incident was tree fall, with 4,751 occurrences, followed by structure fall (2,251) and road cleaning (1,389).

Of the 8,600 incidents recorded by Civil Protection, the most affected areas were the Lisbon and Tagus Valley regions, with 5,250, and the Centre region, with 1,722.

The passage of the depression caused thousands of incidents on the Portuguese mainland, mostly falls of trees and structures, especially in the early hours of Thursday, when orange weather warnings were in force, the second most serious level.

Tonight was calm, in contrast to previous nights. Civil Protection registered just 23 incidents between 00:00 and 6 a.m.
