Lisbon, March 19, 2025 (Lusa) - Fernando Gomes was on Wednesday elected president of the Portuguese Olympic Committee (COP) for a four year term to 2029, winning 103 votes against 78 for his opponent, Laurentino Dias.
Gomes, thus received 57% of the votes cast, announced the president of the COP electoral commission, Vasco Lynce, at the body's headquarters in Lisbon, adding that the turnout was 99%.
A Porto native aged 73, Gomes was president of the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) for 13 years, until last month.
He succeeds Artur Lopes, who took over as president of the COP in August following the death of José Manuel Constantino, who had been elected to a third and final term in March 2022.
