Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Coffee price rise is concern; company has stocks until June - Delta

Lisbon, March 12, 2025 (Lusa) - The CEO of the Portuguese Nabeiro-Delta Cafés Group, Rui Miguel Nabeiro, said on Wednesday that the price of coffee is ‘another concern’ that the company has and that it always works with six to nine months of stock.

The manager was speaking to journalists at the end of the presentation of the launch of Amboim coffee by Delta The Coffee Experience, in Lisbon.

Asked about the price of coffee, which has reached historic highs, Rui Miguel Nabeiro said: "It's another concern we have," as well as Portugal going to elections again.

Last year, "we made two price increases," he said.

"I won't talk about the retail price, of the product, [because] that's a price that the retailers will apply, I don't know what price the coffee will reach," continued the CEO of the Nabeiro-Delta Cafés Group.

But it is with "some concern that we see the international coffee price situation, we can talk about whether it's speculation, I've heard many theories, what is a fact is that there is little coffee to buy on the market, and this has impacted coffee prices," he emphasised.

Delta "always works with six to nine months of stock, and my cousin [Ivan Nabeiro] learnt the art of buying coffee very well from my grandfather," he said.

"We're covered in stock until June," he said, noting that he has no obvious answer as to what will happen after that.

This will depend on the natural evolution of the price, said Rui Miguel Nabeiro.

"We've seen, unfortunately, that it's not just coffee" that has seen a price evolution, because “we see that all commodities, including gold, have been a refuge for financial investors”, he continued.

For this reason, "I'll say again that whether there's speculation here or not, I don't know. I'm not a financier to be able to answer that," said the manager.

However, "I want to believe that it's because coffee hasn't disappeared from the market, coffee consumption at a global level has grown relatively", he pointed out, mentioning that there is talk of the impact of climate change.

In the group, through International Coffee Partners, "we're working hard to support small farmers to avoid situations like these," he said, emphasising that it's difficult to see what will happen in the future with regard to the price of coffee.

"I want to believe that coffee won't go up much more, but a year ago I was saying these things" and "suddenly coffee went up 50% at origin" in one year, he emphasised.

"Delta Cafés will always protect its margins and its business and it's very important that we do so, we're a company that wants to be sustainable in the long term and, therefore, when we feel we have no choice but to pass that price on to the consumer, we'll have to do it," he said.

But he said that "at the moment" the company has stock coverage.
