Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Renewables provide more than 3/4 of all electricity in January

Lisbon, Feb. 3, 2025 (Lusa) - Electricity consumption totalled 5.0 terawatt-hours (TWh) in January, the highest monthly figure ever, 76% of which was supplied by renewable production, REN - Redes Energéticas Nacionais announced on Monday.

According to REN, compared to the same month last year, electricity consumption in January grew by 2.1%, which is reduced to 1.6% when correcting for the effects of temperature and the number of working days.

In the first month of 2025, renewable production supplied 76% of consumption, with wind accounting for 35%, hydro 30%, photovoltaics 6% and biomass 5%.

Non-renewable production, through natural gas power stations, supplied 14% of consumption, while the remaining 10% was supplied by imported energy.

According to REN, the weather conditions in January were favourable for both hydroelectric and wind production, with the productivity indices registering 1.22 (historical average of 1) and 1.27 respectively.

In photovoltaics, the respective index was 0.81, but still with a year-on-year variation of 38%, due to the ‘consistent increase’ in installed capacity.

In the natural gas market, consumption remained stable compared to the same month in 2024, with a slight drop of 0.5% as a result of a 10% growth in the electricity production segment, which almost offset the 4.3% contraction in the conventional segment, which covers all other consumers.

According to REN, the national system is almost entirely supplied from the Sines LNG terminal, with around 70% of the gas coming from Nigeria and the rest from the USA.
