In December 2024, deposits placed by households and private non-profit institutions increased by nearly 2.5 billion euros to reach 150.3 billion euros at the end of the year, the Bank of Greece announced on Wednesday. According to figures released by the central bank, the annual growth rate decreased to 2.4%, from 2.8% in the previous month.
Corporate deposits increased by 3.161 billion euros in December, compared with an increase of 1.718 billion euros in the previous month; the annual growth rate decreased to 10.8% from 11.9% in November.
In particular, deposits from Non-Financial Companies (NFCs) increased by 2.919 billion euros, against an increase of 1.368 billion euros in the previous month. Deposits placed by insurance corporations and other financial intermediaries increased by 242 million euros, compared with an increase of 350 million euros in the previous month.
Deposits placed by the private sector as a whole increased by 5,654 million euros in December, compared with an increase of 2,269 million euros in the previous month; the annual growth rate decreased to 4.5% from 5.0% in the previous month.
Conversely, deposits placed by the general government in December decreased by 411 million euros, compared with an increase of 799 million euros in the previous month; the annual growth rate increased to 7.5%, from -1.7% in the previous month.
With respect to loans, the total debt to the private sector to the banks amounted to 123 billion euros.
The monthly net flow of credit to corporations was positive by 2,891 million euros, compared with a positive net flow of 1,898 million euros in the previous month; the annual growth rate decreased to 14.0% from 16.2% in the previous month.
In particular, the annual growth rate of credit to NFCs decreased to 13.8% from 16.0% in the previous month; the monthly net flow was positive by 2,000 million euros, compared with a positive net flow of 1,706 million euros in the previous month. The annual growth rate of credit to insurance corporations and other financial intermediaries decreased to 15.8% from 18.2% in the previous month; the monthly net flow was positive by 891 million euros, compared with a positive net flow of 192 million euros in the previous month.
The monthly net flow of credit to individuals and private non-profit institutions in December was positive by 55 million euros, compared with a positive net flow of 21 million euros in the previous month; the annual growth rate stood at -0.5%, compared with -0.7% in the previous month.
Specifically, the net flow of credit in housing loans was just 8 million euros, while the net flow of consumer loans was 48 million euros. The annual rate of change of their financing was -0.5%, from -0.7% the previous month.
In December 2024, the annual growth rate of credit to the private sector decreased to 8.9% from 10.0% in the previous month. The monthly net flow of credit was positive by 3,048 million euros, compared with a positive net flow of 1,931 million euros in the previous month.
Finally, the monthly net flow in December 2024 of credit to the general government was positive by 588 million euros, compared with a positive net flow of 558 million euros in the previous month; the annual growth rate stood at -0.2%, compared with -2.4% in the previous month.
