ATA - International Waterbird Census, counting underway in 34 wetland complexes

TIRANA, January 18 /ATA/ The specialists of the Protected Areas throughout the country have begun work today on the International Waterbird Census IWC 2025 in Albania.

The National Agency for Protected Areas reported today that, “This year's IWC in Albania will take place on January 18-19 across 34 wetland complexes. For two consecutive days, specialists from the Regional Administrations of Protected Areas, experts, dedicated ornithologists and volunteers are in 34 counting sites, to conduct the most important study of the year, the International Waterbird Census”.

The staff of the Fier agency started counting the winter waterbirds in one of the most important areas in the country, in the “Divjakë-Karavasta” National Park.

In cooperation with the Ornithological Association, it has been positioned at various points in the park to obtain the most qualitative results on the census.

The census will also be conducted tomorrow in all the protected areas.

Around 143 countries from around the world are carrying out such an important study. Albania has joined the International Waterfowl Census since 1993, where this census was initially conducted in coastal habitats and Lake Shkodra. /k.s/a.f/p.s./
