Lisbon, Jan. 9, 2025 (Lusa) - Portugal's government intends to require RTP, the country's public broadcaster, to run a television channel from its production centre in Porto, with the aim of being closer to that region, the minister for parliamentary affairs said on Thursday.

"The fundamental idea is to bring RTP into today's world and prepare it for the years to come,’ said the minister, Pedro Duarte, in a debate in parliament. 

RTP, he told members, "has been losing its audience and its relevance in our society and we want to reverse this trend by giving it other tools."

To this end, he said, the centre-right coalition government will "impose that a programme service, a channel, be broadcast through the production centre in the North, in Porto."
