Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Contract signed for €233M Lisbon airport upgrade

Lisbon, Nov. 27, 2024 (Lusa) - The contract for remodelling work at Lisbon Airport was signed on Wednesday by Vinci, ANA and a consortium led by Mota-Engil, and is expected to cost €233 million.

The consignment note was signed by Vinci's director for Portugal and Brazil, Thierry Ligonnière, the president of ANA Aeroportos, (the Portuguese airport operator, owned by Vinci) José Luís Arnaut, and the president of civil engineering company Mota-Engil, Carlos Mota dos Santos, at 10.45am, in a ceremony next to Terminal 2 of Humberto Delgado Airport.

The investment, worth €233 million, includes the construction of 10 boarding points and the remodelling of the entire south busgate building, with the work being carried out by a consortium led by Mota-Engil.

In a statement before the agreement was signed, José Luís Arnaut praised the fact that this is an "important moment" and that, with the works, Humberto Delgado Airport "will have a significant upgrade".

Thierry Ligonnière pointed out that this is "the biggest project ANA has done, in terms of figures, since the completion of Porto's Francisco Sá Carneiro airport".

In addition to the contract for these works, a protocol for military use was signed with the Chief of Staff of the Air Force, João Cartaxo Alves.

The minister for housing and infrastructure, Miguel Pinto Luz, spoke of signing "an absolutely essential document with the Air Force".

"If there were any doubts about the Air Force's willingness to be at our side, they have been completely resolved, and that's why we're here today, but we're also already taking subsequent steps, namely we're jointly thinking about the new Air Force Shooting Range, which is absolutely essential to fulfil our commitments to NATO, our national defence commitments," said Miguel Pinto Luz.

He also spoke about the end of the operation of the Figo Maduro Transit Aerodrome No. 1 and that the conditions will have to be guaranteed for Portugal to "continue to receive high-ranking figures with the respect they deserve", but he referred to a presentation in January.

Miguel Pinto Luz also said that he expected Vinci's first report on these works to be delivered on 17 December, where "Vinci's commitments, timetables, ambition and vision for the new airport infrastructure" will be made clear.

Regarding the upgrade work at Lisbon airport, the minister pointed out that it was "essential" because "anyone who uses this airport knows that it has been overcrowded for many years".

Present at the ceremony, where there was no opportunity for questions from journalists, was the prime minister, Luís Montenegro, who did not make any statements.
