Lisbon, Nov. 20, 2024 (Lusa) - As of Wednesday, Lisbon public transport company Carris is accepting on-board payments with a contactless bank card, including the purchase of tickets for groups of up to 10 people, the company announced.
In a statement, Carris explains that it is now possible to use a contactless card, whether physical or virtual, for journeys directly on the validators of "all the company's vehicles" - including buses, trams and the city's three funiculars.
"This is a historic day for Carris and for mobility in the city of Lisbon," the Carris chairman, Pedro Bogas, is quoted in the news release as saying. "With the introduction of payment by bank card, we are reinforcing our commitment to improving our customers' travelling experience, thus guaranteeing greater convenience and better accessibility when using our service."
The new payment option allows the purchase of tickets for families or small groups, up to a maximum of 10 people, with the selection of the number of tickets required directly on the validator.
"The bank card payment option applies to the purchase of the on-board fare, so each purchase is valid for that journey only," the company warns.

Carris is a public company that provides urban transport services for passengers in Lisbon. It is managed by the city council.
