Luanda, Nov. 19, 2024 (Lusa) - Students in Angol said on Tuesday that US President Joe Biden should visit the country with "good intentions" to help develop the economy, considering that the "good relations" between Luanda and Washington should continue to grow.
Hundreds of students from public and private institutions are participating in the second edition of the United States of America (USA) Fair 2024, which is taking place at the António Agostinho Neto Memorial in Luanda. Some have praised the relations between the two countries.
The initiative by the US Embassy in Luanda brings together various exhibitions by US companies and universities, which present students with job and training opportunities, as well as Angolan institutions.
Attending the exhibitions and lectures on how to work with American businesses, the student visa route and the embassy's exchange programmes, the students spoke about the importance of the fair and Joe Biden's visit to Angola, scheduled for the first week of December.
"The relationship [between Angola and the US] has advantages, I think that over the years, there will be more Angolan students going to American universities, and it will help to add more knowledge," Bibiana Arcanjo, a young student at the Colégio Angolano Talatona (CAT), who hopes to complete her higher education in the US, told Lusa.
Érica Fontes, also a student at CAT, applauded the American embassy's initiative to keep students in touch with US reality. She argued that this should help improve Angola's economy in the future.
The young woman said that the fair indicated the good relations between the two countries and that, "if it continues to grow (...), it will only improve and bring more benefits" to Angola.
"If he [Joe Biden, outgoing US President] comes here with good intentions of helping and establishing new partnerships to develop the country, he'll be welcome, but if it's just for a visit, it won't be good for us," she said.
Among the students who filled the main auditorium of the Memorial in honour of Angola's first President was Aguinaldo Leal, president of the Students' Association of Colégio 7 Saberes, who described the initiative as “a meeting of creativity and intentions to progress”.
Aguinaldo believes that relations between Angola and the US "are very good" because of the US giant's support for Angola. He classifies the fair as "a very important gain for the students".
Regarding Joe Biden's visit to Angola, scheduled for the first week of December, the student leader said that the country should welcome him with "open arms", believing that it will be historic and will bring "new opportunities and solutions" to Angola's problems.
"We expect a lot of change; a US President in Angola will go down in history because he is a powerful President, and coming to Angola means that he is looking for new opportunities and solutions to our problems," concluded the student.
The United States of America Fair 2024 (US FAIR) is being held under the slogan "Building Bridges to the Future: Empowering Opportunities".
