Luanda, Nov. 5, 2024 (Lusa) - Angola's Criminal Investigation Service (SIC) announced on Tuesday the largest ever seizure of fuel, more than 800,000 litres, stored in modified containers that were to be distributed for smuggling.
According to the head of the SIC, Manuel Halaiwa, there were around ten containers with the fuel at the construction site, in Bengo province, which was collected by lorries and transported to various points in the country, close to the borders.
Arrested during the raid were a 29-year-old Chinese national, who was in charge of the company, and a 33-year-old Angolan.
Every week, the authorities carry out various actions to prevent and combat fuel smuggling, a crime that results in significant losses in terms of revenue.
A litre of petrol costs around 30 cents in Angola, while in the Democratic Republic of Congo it sells for 1 euro.
On Saturday, it was announced that another 600,000 litres of fuel had been seized from shipyards in the same area.
